Dhaka, April 8 (IANS) The death toll due to the novel coronavirus pandemic rose to 20 in Bangladesh, after three more patients died from the infection on Wednesday, according to IEDCR Director Meerjady Sabrina Flora.

It marks the biggest jump in positive tests in a single day since Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8, bdnews 24 reported.

As many as 33 infected people have returned home after recovery, according to the IEDCR. But there were no recovered patients in the last 24 hours.

A total of 981 samples have been tested for the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, said Flora. Of the 54 cases reported on Wednesday, 39 were detected in Dhaka.

The number of confirmed cases have soared this week on the back of increased testing, setting a new daily record for a sixth day.
